An introduction to The Runninger
2 min readRunning is something I have been doing for a long time.I have been running on and off since my primary school years in the small country town of Taree NSW. It was something I enjoyed then and love now.
In 1998 I moved from Taree to Sydney in search of greater life experiences and found running. During my teenage years I played a lot of team sports with friends, now that I had moved away I no longer had any competitive sport in my life. I went for a run one afternoon
I started running more, usually not far and usually not very comfortable but I was enjoying these small runs. Not long after this I bought a ‘Runner’s World’ magazine and whilst reading this found a fun run to enter and train for. The 1998 Berowra Bush Bash 10km, tagged in the magazine as ‘The toughest 10km in Sydney.’ Going into this race I thought I was ready to run a good race, in hindsight I was nowhere near ready, I estimate my longest run was 5km at most. There were no Garmin’s back then for me. I finished my first fun run but it was tough, 46mins for 10km, not bad for a rookie, lots of walking and plenty of self doubt for my future in running.
At this stage I wasn’t sure I cut out for this stuff, but I knew I wanted to challenge myself, I wanted to find out how to become a runner. Since then I have become a runner, I have become a lot faster and train a lot smarter. I have competed in countless fun runs, many half marathons, 2 x marathons, countless sprint triathlons, 3 x Ironman 70.3 triathlons and earlier this year my first 50km Ultramarathon.
I am proud of my running achievements and even prouder to call myself runner. I hope to use this space to share with you my journey in running and triathlon.
